About Barend van Hoek

Barend’s images invite you to a glimpse of the world through his eyes and into his mind as it subconsciously grabs at what arrests him. His subjects are always people, mostly women.  On first take, these drawing bespeak a slightly offensive objectification of women, but one quickly realizes that his subjects hold all the power. Enough power, in fact, that a mere passing peripheral glimpse  is transformed into a striking, larger-than-life projection.

1987 – Lorem ipsum

1993 – Lorem ipsum, Solor

2011 – Exhibition at Lorem Ipsum, “Solor Di lomet solal”

This isn’t so much about the lewdness of men, as it is about their fundamental vulnerability in the face of the all-powerful woman.  The women in these images, whether they’re checking text messages, reading a book or just staring out the window, could care less about their obsessive and probably somewhat tormented audience. They’ve long since disappeared while their maker continues to toil over his canvas.
